We rarely see this error. When we do, it means that one or more components didn't register properly in Windows.

The problem shows up on isolated Windows XP computers when the Remote Backup Client software seems to stall with the message on screen:

Either the computer is having some registry problems or perhaps was inaccessable in some way when an update was performed, or the system has multiple references in the registry, also indicitave of some problem writing the accurate registry entries to permanent storage on disk.

There is either bad data, or missing data in your registry where these components are referenced.

HOW TO CORRECT (CLIENT ONLY)

First try try uninstalling and reinstalling the software.

If reinstalling fails to solve the problem, do this:

Start Windows Task manager. On the Applications Tab, find "RBClient" and "RBackup" and End both applications, if they are running.

On the Processes tab, find "RBackup.exe" and "RBClient.exe" and end both of those processes if they are running.

Download one of the following .BAT files and execute them with the START / RUN box. Download the file for the version of Windows you are using.

After running the .BAT file, reboot your computer and restart the Remote Backup software.

For Windows 98 and 95 -
regwin.bat

For Windows NT, and 2000 -
regwinnt.bat

For Windows XP and 2003 -
regxp2k3.bat

If reinstallation and the batch file fails, you most likely have real trouble with your computer's Registry files, and are likely experiencing other problems with other applications.

IF YOU HAVE A GOOD REGISTRY UTILITY, like Norton's, Quarterdeck, etc, that software may be able to clean out bad entries in the registry. Certainly a Program called ComExplorer.exe (www.comexplorer.com) is useful in resolving ACTIVE-X Registration issues, which this is.

If all else fails, try removing REGISTRY ENTRIES that might be incorrect, then reinstalling

NOTE: Do not perform this operation unless you are familiar with using the REGEDIT utility and have made a backup copy of your Registry. Making mistakes here can corrupt your Windows installation and require that you re-install Windows.

1. Open RegEdit.

2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

3. Press "r", that should jump you to the vicinity of "rbClient.Connector

rbClient.Connector

rbClient.IrbStatus

rbControl.CRBCommand

There may be a few others.

Any other entries here that start with rbclient. or rbcontrol. should be deleted here.

Then reinstall. That may resolve this.

Since this same symptom can show if there is an error that prevents the registry from being written, this may or may not work. If it does not work, you should use a registry correction utility and then try to reinstall.

HOW TO CORRECT 429 ERROR (SERVER)

Download the following .BAT file and execute it with the START / RUN box. This batch file works on computers that have a \WINDOWS\System32\ directory, and the Remote Backup software is installed in the default location, C:\Program Files\RBS Server\. For other installation types, edit the batch file with Notepad before running it.

For the RBS Server -
regserver.bat
