CAN YOU TELL ME ALL MY STARTUP COSTS?

Software: RBACKUP Version 8.3

If we could, we would. We can give you some averages, though. All these costs are variable, depending on the resources you have available to you. You don't need ALL these expenses, they're just recommendations.

RBS Software You'll need the RBackup RBS Software, which is sold by the maximum number of clients it can service.

The RBS Business Kit This comes with most of the resources you'll need to start and operate a commercial Remote Backup Service. In addition you may want other products to enhance your business.

Hardware ($1000+) Pentium-4 Class computer, 512 Meg RAM, 80 gigabytes of hard drive space, some way to back it up to tape or CD. This is the minimum recommended hardware configuration. If you already own a computer like this or better, you can use it. Our best recommendation for a starter server is a Pentium-4, 1 Gig RAM, two 120 gigabyte hard drives, and a CD burner, for about $1000.

Operating System ($99 - $349) We recommend Windows 2000 Pro or Server, 2003 Server, or XP Pro.

Utility Software ($49 - $249) You may want to install a firewall, virus protection, accounting, and other software to help run your service.

Internet Access ($29 - $60+) This is a per-month charge. Internet access is different in different parts of the world. We recommend buying the most bandwidth you can for a reasonable amount of money. Don't spend $1200/month for a 1.53mb T-1 right off the bat. Get a business DSL or ADSL account, or you may be able to start with a home account. DSL is often as fast or faster than an expensive T-1. That should be your first choice. If you can't get DSL or ADSL, try for Cable Modem. Failing that, try two-way Satellite. You don't need to buy a "Static IP Address" because RBS's software will work without one.

Router/Hub ($149 - $299+) If you are going to share your Internet connection among several computers including your RBS Server you will need a Router and maybe a Hub. Sometimes the two come packaged together, so you only need to buy a Router. If you already have a good router, you won't need to buy one.

Marketing (0 - ??) You can spend nothing up to thousands on marketing. You need to budget for it, but we can't tell you how much to spend. You can get some good ideas for marketing to the prospects you want to reach by reading The RBS Book. (You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read The RBS Book.)

Basic costs of doing business (??) Utilities, salaries, insurance, amortization of your equipment, postage, professional fees, your RBS Support Subscription, etc - all the "normal" costs incurred by a business.

You can start a Remote Backup Service on a shoestring, or you can go all-out and buy expensive servers and hire a lot of people. We've had RBS Providers do it both ways with success.
