Article Number: 100082
Software: RBACKUP
Web Session ID: 8467
Visitor Name: Tim
Subject: server/client software
Session History:
[12/06/01@13:08:21] Visitor arrived
[13:08:21] Visited Remote Backup Systems - http://www.alice.net/
[13:08:53] Chat session connected
[13:08:53] Welcome to Remote Backup Systems. Please hold while we find the best
representative for your question...
[13:08:53] Chat session serviced by CSR Jeff
[13:09:09] Jeff says: Hello! May I help you?
[13:09:28] Tim says: yes please
[13:09:45] Tim says: i want to ask specific questions regarding both software
[13:09:49] Jeff says: ok,
[13:10:52] Tim says: the client software is designed in such a way wherein the
client tries to upload certain files for backup on a specific time
[13:11:01] Tim says: right?
[13:11:08] Jeff says: Right.
[13:12:38] Tim says: so, our clients leaves the computer on?
[13:13:04] Jeff says: Yes. He can also put it on a timer that turns it on at night,
but few are bothering to do that.
[13:13:06] Tim says: and the software automatically sends the backup files?
[13:13:14] Jeff says: Right.
[13:13:22] Tim says: ok
[13:13:40] Tim says: what if the client has a dial-up internet account?
[13:13:47] Tim says: must he leave the internet on?
[13:14:05] Jeff says: Our Client dials the ISP at connect time, and closes the
connection when done.
[13:14:24] Tim says: so we dont have to worry about the client being online?
[13:14:37] Tim says: the client software does that too?
[13:14:42] Jeff says: That's right.
[13:15:09] Jeff says: Limitations are - the Client will not work over a free
internet connection like Juno or Freenet or NetZero
[13:15:14] Tim says: how about for clients without internet access but does have a
modem so they can use a dial-up?
[13:16:03] Jeff says: For them you can provide modems for them to dial into on your
Server, OR you can buy cheap bulk internet accounts from an ISP and resell them. They sell
them cheap when the find out they'll only be used at night, and not for email or surfing.
[13:16:13] Tim says: why cant they use free internet accounts?
[13:16:32] Jeff says: Free accounts normally do not allow any traffic except mail
and browsing.
[13:16:40] Tim says: ok
[13:17:00] Tim says: the files are compressed and encrypted before they are sent to
the server right?
[13:17:09] Jeff says: Right.
[13:17:37] Tim says: so we have little to worry with certain files that have worms
or viruses?
[13:17:53] Jeff says: Nothing to worry. They will not infect your Server.
[13:18:41] Tim says: now, we are trying to setup a certain infrastructure wherein we
will have a raid to store all the data that has been uploaded
[13:19:02] Tim says: somewhere between 500GB to 1Tb
[13:19:38] Tim says: is there a way where we can dock the uploaded data for backup
onto a certain disc like a pitstop before it goes in to the raid for storage?
[13:20:26] Tim says: and can we install certain server software to work with RBackup
to maximize it's efficiency?
[13:20:50] Jeff says: I don't think so - the Server needs access to the primary
storage for verifying its catalogs and file integrity. I don't know much about large scale
drive storage, though.
[13:21:04] Jeff says: I don't know what server software you're asking about.
[13:21:46] Tim says: becuase we are also trying to come up with security features to
protect ourselves like firewalls and virus scanners
[13:22:38] Jeff says: OK, that's a good idea.
[13:24:19] Tim says: so, can we just scan the files that are being uploaded for
viruses or anything malicious before they are sent to the hard drives?
[13:24:53] Jeff says: I think Norton and Mcafee scan as files come in, don't they?
[13:25:07] Tim says: yes
[13:25:42] Jeff says: Then they might work without modification to anything.
[13:25:50] Tim says: ok
[13:26:17] Tim says: we researched that already and Norton has a similar product for
web scanning
[13:26:40] Jeff says: Good!
[13:29:18] Tim says: one last question
[13:29:29] Jeff says: Sure, go ahead.
[13:29:56] Tim says: the client software automatically turns itself on including
dialing up it's own isp so files can be uploaded and backed up?
[13:30:45] Jeff says: Well, the software runs all the time, so technically, it
doesn't "turn itself on," but it does wake up at the scheduled time and dial the ISP, yes.
[13:32:28] Tim says: so after installing it with the customer's computer, the
software runs at the background?
[13:32:52] Tim says: everytime they boot up or shut down and turn the computer back
on?
[13:33:04] Jeff says: Yes. It hides on the system tray with the other things down
there. Yes, it comes up with Windows.
[13:34:02] Tim says: is there an electronic documentation or installation
instruction that comes with the business kit in cases wherein customers would want to
download the client software from our website?
[13:34:40] Tim says: what are the minimum requirements for a server to run the
server software and client software?
[13:34:46] Jeff says: Yes. There is a complete "e-book" style launcher with links
and help, all kinds of things. It's all electronic, and included with all installations.
[13:35:01] Jeff says: Server minimum...
[13:35:37] Jeff says: Celeron 500, 128 Meg RAM and as big a hard drive as you need.
Most people use a bigger computer than that, but that's the minimum.
[13:35:44] Jeff says: Client minimum...
[13:36:08] Jeff says: 486 with Windows 95 or above, 64 meg RAM.
[13:36:39] Tim says: does the client work with windows xp?
[13:36:48] Jeff says: YEs.
[13:38:25] Tim says: do you know anything about setting up a server to host the
server software plus having a backup server just in case anything goes wrong?
[13:38:39] Jeff says: Sure, we do that here.
[13:38:46] Jeff says: I mean, we do it for hosted servers.
[13:38:49] Tim says: cool
[13:39:04] Jeff says: What I mean to say is...
[13:39:16] Tim says: because we plan on purchasing a server to host the server
software
[13:39:32] Tim says: and have another server as backup just in case something wrong
happens
[13:39:38] Jeff says: For $350/month we'll host your server here. We keep a hot
spare on the shelf in case any of our rented servers burp.
[13:40:05] Tim says: but my partners want to do those things ourselves
[13:40:05] Jeff says: Thats ALWAYS a good idea. You are, of course, a backup
company.
[13:40:17] Jeff says: (or will be)
[13:41:07] Tim says: is there any support you guys can provide us with regards to
setting up our hardware or particular infrastructure?
[13:42:04] Jeff says: Not usually beyond verifying that the hardware you have chosen
will work with our software.
[13:42:15] Tim says: ok
[13:42:23] Tim says: well thanks for your help
[13:42:32] Jeff says: You're welcome, any time.
[13:42:37] Tim says: we hope to purchase the business kit sometime really soon
