Busy 2006 Hurricane Season Predicted - RBS Hot Site Service on Standby
The US Hurricane season predictions for 2006 are grim and point to an active season overall. While officials at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are quick to point out that they are not predicting a repeat of last year’s record season (at least ‘not yet’ according to the report) they are urging businesses and individuals to make advanced preparations for a very active season.
"The outlook calls for a very active 2006 season, with 13-16 named storms, 8-10 hurricanes, and 4-6 major hurricanes. The likely range of the ACE index ['the collective intensity and duration of Atlantic named storms and hurricanes during a given hurricane season.'] is 135%-205% of the median. This prediction indicates a continuation of above-normal activity that began in 1995.
Citing reasons including sea surface temperature averages and a host of other technical weather trends in support of their current predictions, the scientists at NOAA were also quick to point out that many of the key determining factors are simply unpredictable at this point. In fact, the report states that: "The main uncertainty in this outlook is not whether the season will be above normal, but how much above normal it will be. The 2006 season could become the fourth hyperactive season in a row."
If you or your clients are located in a hurricane prone area, RBS urges you to prepare now for situations that may develop later. Use this report to remind your clients that the time is now for action, and that without a proper backup of their critical data, you will be limited in your ability to assist them after a disaster.
Read up on the Hurricane Hot Site service that RBS offers to our licensees in these areas, and be prepared to quickly provide us the information that we need to assist you in your time of crisis. RBS Steals the Show at ISPCON Baltimore
As Internet Service Providers look for different and better ways to leverage their infrastructure for profit, remote backup is emerging as the ideal value-add for these companies. It is with this thought in mind that RBS has become a frequent exhibitor at ISPCON, the definitive event for wireless and wired ISPs. The Spring event was held in sunny, crime-free Baltimore, Maryland and proved to be a great event for us.
Attendance was good and interest was high among the midsized ISPs as well as hosting and technical services entities. RBS came away from the show with a better understanding of the many issues facing domestic and foreign service providers - and a better understanding of how our product can help them to overcome some of these.
The fall show is scheduled for November 7-9 in Santa Clara, California, and once again we’ll be there. Thanks to all of our existing RBS/ISPs who dropped by the booths in Baltimore, and thanks to the many other licensees who dropped by to say hello. We appreciate your enthusiasm, and your help in assisting us with bringing our best product to market.

How BitBackup Works - An Overview of RBackup Bit-level Technology
BitBackup technology has been well-received by our thousands of licensees worldwide. It enables a much more efficient use of bandwidth and server resources, and takes a more intelligent approach to managing files throughout the backup process. It is important to understand how the process works, and what the requirements are on both client and server side.
Mitch Romm of Dr. Backup (www.drbackup.net) developed a document which provides an excellent overview of the concepts and processes involved with the RBS BitBackup technology.
The document is available for download from the RBS website at the following link:

Small Businesses to Drive Continued Growth in Storage and Backup Markets
Data backup and email archiving services are fueling much of the growth in the storage-as-a-service market, according to recent industry figures and reports. The same reports (compiled by IDC) estimate that the 2005 market for data backup and hosted email archiving services was over 300 million dollars. Of this figure, a whopping 150 million was spent by small to mid-sized businesses.
As companies become better acquainted with web-services offerings, such as online and/or outsourced payroll and CRM products, they are becoming increasingly comfortable with the concept of secure offsite data storage. When the realization suddenly strikes that some, or even most, of a company’s data is being maintained or hosted in cyberspace, remote backup service is a natural progression to protecting that organization’s remaining critical data stores.
While corporations have had an impressive degree of protection for their data for many years, tens of thousands of SMBs and SMEs have yet to come into the fold. Backup services and software have improved across the board, broadband connectivity is commonplace, and computer data is more important now than ever before. The big companies, including Telcos and Cable Providers, have failed to scale their backup offerings to the preferences of this huge business sector, leaving the door wide open for localized web services companies to grab the business. Next year’s market for these services will undoubtedly top half a billion dollars. What slice will you take?
