WHAT ROUTER AND FIREWALL DO YOU RECOMMEND?

There are a few devices that our Service Providers have had trouble with, and we recommend against using. They include all older Linksys routers without a Cisco label, any kind of Internet Connection Sharing using proxy servers like WinGate, or Microsoft’s ICS, or anything that requires a computer to have two NIC cards in order to share a connection among multiple computers.

This is not to say that doing it the “right” way is more expensive or problematic than doing it the “wrong” way. To the contrary, if you set up the Server hardware and software correctly it’s usually less expensive and a whole lot less trouble than trying to shoehorn it into a kludged up system.

The proper way to set up an RBS Server is to connect the cable/dsl modem to a good router and the router to a switch if your router does not have a built-in switch. If you only want to run one computer, just plug the computer directly into the cable/dsl modem.

Netgear routers, the 314 series and above, have been used successfully. We use and recommend the ZoneAlarm firewall. Setup information is in our Knowledge Library and easily found on the vendor’s websites.

It works very well to host the RBS Server on the same computer that hosts a web server. The RBS Server has no known vulnerabilities. However, Windows and IIS do. We recommend, use, and include the Apache web server with our products.
