Mercury Online Backup

I introduced my latest Online Backup project, codenamed “Mercury”, back on June 23. It would also have to use a different business and technical model.

1 October 2007 - 7:57Use RBackup to Help Track Stolen Computers

The RBackup Client software sends its IP address to the RBS Server whenever it contacts the Server. That feature can be used to track stolen computers because IP addresses are assigned to specific Internet Service Providers.

The Client’s IP address is displayed in the Monitor View of the RBS Manager. It is also logged in the Server’s DRBSxxxxxx.log files.

So, all you have to do is to wait until the stolen computer contacts the RBS Server during its next backup (assuming the thief connects it to the Internet and RBackup launches), record the IP address, and look it up here:  http://tools.whois.net/whoisbyip/

Give this information to the police. It will give them a starting point to help find your stolen computer.

(Thanks to two RBS Service Providers who posted this on the RBS Service Provider’s Forum)

1 October 2007 - 7:06Windows Vista “Slow” according to NPR Report

An NPR report this morning explained how techies are reporting that Vista is buggy and is much slower than XP at file scanning. It also has a tendency to lock up some applications. Many Vista users are complaining that games and other applications run slower on Vista. Microsoft has admitted this fact and “is working on the problem.” They have recommended leaving the computer on at night so it can automatically update as Microsoft fixes these issues.

Nighttime Windows Vista updates and reboots can interfere with the operation of RBackup Client software, causing missed backups and larger resumed backups during subsequent backup sessions.
