Small Businesses Turn to Online Backup

October 3rd, 2007 Comments off

Online backup seems to be all the rage as of late. Vendors are springing up either catering to a specific niche or claiming to do everything for next to nothing. While such services aren’t likely to attract enterprise users, they are certainly luring many SMBs. All you have to do is sign up, decide which files to back up, set a schedule and your files are automatically backed up daily.

But the online backup market isn’t just attracting small startups. The big boys, too, are rolling out inexpensive services aimed squarely at the SMB market.

Use RBackup to Help Track Stolen Computers

October 1st, 2007 Comments off

The RBackup Client software sends its IP address to the RBS Server whenever it contacts the Server. That feature can be used to track stolen computers because IP addresses are assigned to specific Internet Service Providers.

The Client’s IP address is displayed in the Monitor View of the RBS Manager. It is also logged in the Server’s DRBSxxxxxx.log files.

So, all you have to do is to wait until the stolen computer contacts the RBS Server during its next backup (assuming the thief connects it to the Internet and RBackup launches), record the IP address, and look it up here:  http://tools.whois.net/whoisbyip/

Give this information to the police. It will give them a starting point to help find your stolen computer.

EMC to Buy Mozy for $76M

October 1st, 2007 Comments off

Recent news reports indicate that a deal is in the works for EMC to buy Mozy for $76M. Both parties are tight-lipped about the deal. Mozy was reportedly capitalized with $1.6M, giving Mozy’s owners a massive profit, if the deal goes through.

There have been a number of high-profile (and high-dollar) purchases of RBS Service Providers by much larger companies within the past 18 months. Remote Backup Systems considers this GOOD NEWS for the industry.  It shows that Online Backup is living up to the early hype that it is the next big thing – the way everyone will eventually back up.

We know that we are selling far more large accounts than we used to, and that Service Providers are buying more client licenses for existing packages. That’s very good news for all of us.

Windows Vista “Slow” according to NPR Report

October 1st, 2007 Comments off

An NPR report this morning explained how techies are reporting that Vista is buggy and is much slower than XP at file scanning. It also has a tendency to lock up some applications. Many Vista users are complaining that games and other applications run slower on Vista. Microsoft has admitted this fact and “is working on the problem.” They have recommended leaving the computer on at night so it can automatically update as Microsoft fixes these issues.

Nighttime Windows Vista updates and reboots can interfere with the operation of RBackup Client software, causing missed backups and larger resumed backups during subsequent backup sessions.
